Dear New Mexico Families Bringing a new baby home is a special time, and Family Connects New Mexico (FCNM) is here to ensure you feel confident and supported every step of the way. This free program, offered by the New Mexico Early Childhood Education and Care Department (ECECD), provides in-home visits from registered nurses to families with newborns during the first few weeks after birth. Our goal is to help you feel confident, capable, and connected—because no one should have to navigate postpartum and the early stages alone. Why families choose Family Connects: Family Connects is a nationally recognized, evidence-based model delivering measurable benefits. Independent studies show: 50% fewer emergency room visits and hospital stays for babies in their first year. Mothers are 30% less likely to experience postpartum depression or anxiety. There's a 15% increase in families utilizing local resources and support services. What to expect during your home visit: A registered nurse will visit your home around three weeks after your baby is born. They provide personalized support on topics like newborn care (weight checks, feeding, soothing tips), maternal health (postpartum checks, mental health screenings), and connect you to local resources such as child care, mental health support, or parenting groups. How it works: If you deliver at a participating University of New Mexico hospital in Bernalillo, Sandoval, Cibola, McKinley, Torrance, or Valencia counties, you're automatically eligible. A Family Connects nurse will connect with you at the hospital or shortly after birth to schedule a visit. Typically, families receive one to three visits over two to three months, tailored to their individual needs.
